How to Register For An ACMPR License

The Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations (ACMPR) authorization is essential if you, as a patient, wish to grow your own medical cannabis. With this authorization medical patients with a green thumb can rely on home cultivation or a designated grower (who will grow on their behalf) for their medical cannabis or to supplement what they are ordering from a provider.

In this post, we’ll break down what an ACMPR license is, how to apply for one and how to get started once you receive authorization from Health Canada.

If you don’t have a medical document authorizing the use of cannabis for medicinal purposes, you’ll want to make an appointment with your healthcare provider. If you can’t see your own physician or don’t know where to start, an alternative that we recommend is Apollo Cannabis Clinics. They offer free Canada-wide telemedicine services and will work with you to create a treatment plan. Read more about what to expect at an Apollo cannabis Clinic appointment here.

Be sure to tell your physician that you intend to grow your own plants as you will need your original medical document to send to Health Canada to register for an ACMPR license.

In order to complete the registration process, you will need to send Health Canada the following documents:

  • The original medical document from your health care provider
  • The completed registration application form for personal production, which includes a signed and dated declaration from the person who owns the site where you intend to produce consenting to the production if:
  • You do not own the site, and
  • It is not your ordinary place of residence.

Once you have a registration certificate, you may want to register with a licensed producer like Shelter Market to order:

  • plants and/or seeds as starting materials
  • an interim supply of dried cannabis, or cannabis oil

You may also want to access this interim supply option while you wait for your first harvest or if your crop is unsuccessful and you don’t have enough cannabis in storage to meet your needs.

It’s important to note that since seeds and clones are a means of producing cannabis, a Registration Certificate is required to purchase them on Shelter Market. Per section 290 (2) of the Cannabis Regulations, three seeds are equivalent to one cannabis plant. This means we may limit your purchase of seeds based on the amount of plants you are eligible for under your Registration Certificate
